Skáld (Nordic Folk – France) released a beautiful new music video for Fimbulvetr, the first single from their second album, Vikings Memories.
Fimbulvetr is inspired by the harsh winter that immediately precedes the events of the Ragnarök from Norse mythology. The music was written by producer Christophe Voisin-Boisvinet, who also adapted Poetic Edda texts compiled by Snorri Sturluson for the lyrcs.
Vikings Memories is available for pre-order and will be released via Decca Records (a division of Universal Music) on October 9th.

Lyrics – Fimbulvetr
Ek man eftir Fimbulvetr
Þá drífr snær ór öllum áttum,
Frost mikil ok vindar hvassir
at vetr sá kemr.
Þeir vetr fara þrír saman
ok ekki sumar milli,
Ek man eftir Fimbulvetr
vindöld, vargöld, Sól tér sortna,
hann er a hverian veg,
at vetr sá kemr.
Hann hefir arnarham,
en er hann beinir flug,
þá standa vindar undan vængjum hans.
x2
“Hvaðan kemr vindr?
þá má eigi sjá hann,
Hvaðan kemr vindr?
“Hvaðan kemr vindr?
þá má eigi sjá hann,
því er hann undarliga skapaðr.“
Ek man eftir Fimbulvetr
Þá drífr snær ór öllum áttum,
Frost mikil ok vindar hvassir
at vetr sá kemr.
Hann hefir arnarham,
en er hann beinir flug,
þá standa vindar undan vængjum hans.
x2
“Kári, Logi, reiði jötnar, Hraesvelg blæst“
x4
Sér hon upp koma öðru sinni
jörð ór ægi iðjagræna,
falla forsar, flýgr örn yfir,
sá er á fjalli fiska veiðir.
Translation – Great Winter
I remember Great winter
snow was driven from all quarters,
frosts were be great then, and winds sharp.
This winter will come back.
“Three winters in succession,
and no summer between.“
I remember Great winter
wind-time, wolf-time, the sun grows dark,
from the four wind areas.
This winter will come back.
He is clad in eagles’ plumes,
and when he spreads his wings,
the winds arise from under them.
x2
“Whence comes the wind?
it cannot be seen.
Whence comes the wind?
Whence comes the wind?
it cannot be seen.
it’s wonderfully made.“
I remember Great winter
snow was driven from all quarters,
frosts were be great then, and winds sharp.
This winter will come back.
He is clad in eagles’ plumes,
and when he spreads his wings,
the winds arise from under them.
x2
“Kári, Logi, wrath of the giants, Hraesvelg is blowing.“
x4
Now she sees the earth anew
rise all green from the waves again,
the cataracts fall, and the eagle flies,
and fish he catches beneath the cliffs.
