The Brazilian Native American Folk Metal band Arandu Arakuaa released the music video for Waptokwa Zawré (“Great Spirit” in the Xerente people language).

The song will be part of the group’s fifth album, whose recordings were completed in January.

Arandu Arakuaa

“Arandu Arakuaa” means “to know the cycles of the heavens” or “the wisdom of the cosmos”, in the Tupi-Guarani language. The band was founded in 2008 by instrumentalist and vocalist Zândhio Huku. From the beginning, the group sought to combine heavy metal with Brazilian indigenous and regional music, making use of the languages of indigenous peoples in the lyrics, such as Tupi, Xerente and Xavante.

The lyrics were inspired by cosmologies, wisdom and stories of the struggles of the indigenous peoples of Brazil. Through them, Arandu Arakuaa seeks to do its part in disseminating and valuing the cultural manifestations of the native peoples of Brazil.

In order to recreate music rooted in Brazilian culture, instruments such as indigenous rattles and a viola guitar (idealized by Zândhio himself) are used by the musicians, resulting in very unique sounding compositions.
