The prolific British one-man Nordic/Germanic folk band, Herknungr, released a new album, titled Ættingi (Kinsman).
Featuring 13 tracks, Ættingi is a dark ambient album about Viking life in an Scandinavian settlement, featuring Nordic instrumentation, as well as orchestral elements.
According to an interview given to Dark Folk Nation, Alex McCree created Herknungr (“Warrior King” in Old Norse) in 2018. He mixes folk instruments with samplers to create music inspired by both Nordic folk artists and video game soundtracks.
In another interview given to Kurgan Compass, McCree shared some words about his musical explorations through Nordic, Saxon and Angle cultures, from which he draws a sense of morality and masculinity that translate into his creative process.
For his previous works, he has also collaborated with other artists from the Nordic folk scene, such as Amanda Aalto, Fuimadane and Corey Judd. Apart from his own music, McCree also promotes other artists in his 24/7 live Viking/Pagan radio.
