Illuriah released a new single, titled Surtr, which will be featured on its upcoming second album.
The song refers to the fire giant from Norse mythology who leads his relatives in the battle against the gods Aesir and Vanir during Ragnarok. Destined to kill the god Freyr (and be killed by him), he arrives from Muspelheim, the region of heat and fire in the far south, bringing his sword of fire, with which the world is razed before sinking into the sea.
According to the historian Rudolf Simek, Surtr represents the supernatural force that corresponds to the “(volcanic) fire of the Underworld”, something that would certainly have a deep emotional resonance for any ancient Icelandic individual, given the high intensity of volcanic activity that characterizes the island.
