The tireless Kjell Braaten is back with Hamr (Shape, Shapeshift), the first piece of his next album, Blóta.
Presented as a beautiful animation, the video portrays the musician himself connecting with his surroundings in a natural landscape. The artwork was painted by Fátima Ackerson, while the animations were created by José Manchado.
Kjell shared a few words about the meaning behind the tune.
“When connected to the forces around, one can stretch out and become a part of it. A part of the greater whole. This is a way to search for a more comprehensive experience, a broader view, wisdom, and sometimes even answers.
One can use it to help make the right decisions in uncertain times and situations and help guide your way when you get lost or lose the foundation you build your life upon, forced to find a new way.”
Hamr will be followed by Frithr, the second single from Blóta, on March 4th. Make sure you pre-save it. The album itself will be released on April 1st and will be the first of several albums to see the light of the day very soon. You can already pre-order and/or pre-save it from multiple platforms.

Apart from his involvement in many musical projects, the musician will also appear on the upcoming Netflix series, Vikings: Valhalla, as a specialist and performer on ancient Nordic instruments. He’ll be joining the team that already features Kati Rán and, hopefully, many other great Nordic folk musicians.
Kjell’s latest release was a live CD recorded at Bronseplassen, a small iron-age farm in southern Norway, July 10, 2021. The album was revealed in November and you can order it from the musician’s Bandcamp page.
