Sól, the debut album of the Nordic folk project by Dutch musician and producer Jonathan Barendsma, Gealdýr, is now available.
The album was released on the independent label Fimbul Records, founded by Mike Olsen of Danheim. The work consists of seven music tracks inspired by the history and mythology of the Nordic people, using reconstructions of ancient instruments.
A daughter is birthed by Álfröðull (the Sun goddess) after she is swallowed by the wolf Fenrir. She (the New Sun) shall ride as the gods are dying on the old paths of her mother. The sun I saw, and it seemed to me as if I saw a glorious god: I bowed before her, for the last time, in the world of men.
Gealdýr’s first album “Sól’’ tells about the creation of this world, the end of it and the rebirth. The ongoing cycle of life. Nowadays most people think that life is very linear, but when we look into Norse mythology we can find that even after Ragnarök (The fate of the Gods) life will continue. The old sun will die and a new one will be born. The old Gods die and after that, the world is ready for a new cycle to start.
Sól is available on CD and in digital format.

Gealdýr was founded in 2018 by musician and producer Jonathan Barendsma. The name of the project is a combination of the words “Geal” (“white” in Gaelic) and Dýr (“deer” in Old Norse). This combination reflects the composer’s inspirations from these two ancient cultures.
In an interview to Ravenzcraft Arts, the musician revealed that he was talking to a friend while walking in the forest. They talked about his music and what the project should be called. Fate put a white deer in front of him and he knew at the time what name he should adopt. For this, he combined ancient terms from the Nordic and Celtic cultures, thus combining with the elements that make up his music.
In the same interview, he revealed that his greatest musical inspiration is Wardruna, which he met in a particularly difficult period of his life, helping him to overcome it. From there, he immersed himself in Norse mythology to rescue the wisdom of the ancient peoples and, with it, create his art.

The lyrics of the songs are based on the Viking Age, being inspired or sipping directly from the well of Norse mythology. With the help of sounds of nature and the use of ancient instruments, in addition to a truly striking voice, Barendsma immerses the listener in the atmosphere of the forests of northern Europe.
