Pororoka (Dark Folk – Ukraine) released a new single, titled Hagalaz, a reference to the 9th rune of the Elder Futhark runic alphabet.
Hagalaz means radical change, ruination, natural disaster and crisis, but also new beginnings. The band also traces a parallel to Slavic paganism.
“In Ukrainian authentic pagan beliefs there is such a Goddess as Mara (Morena), who is personifying death and new birth. She could take life and give a new fate/’dolya’ for man.”
The Goddess Mara, the equivalent to the Nordic Hel, was the inspiration for the visuals adopted by vocalist and percussionist Svitlana Sugak for the photo session.

Pororoka was founded in Kiev, Ukraine, in 2017 by singer Svitlana Sugak and guitarist Eugene Kolyada. The name of the band is a reference to a twice-in-a-year (September and March) strong wave that is formed during the encounter between the Amazon River and the Atlantic Ocean waters.
The band mix three different types of voices, which are accompanied by a grunge guitar, a tender bandura, a piano and a djembe. Their songs are about life and death, man’s fate and love, as well as Ukranian culture and history.
