Wardruna‘s vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Einar Selvik is writing original songs for Ubisoft’s upcoming Assassin’s Creed Valhalla digital role-playing game.

Update: we previously reported that Einar Selvik was going to join composers Jesper Kyd and Sarah Schachner (both responsible for scoring previous releases of the Assassin’s Creed franchise) to compose the game’s soundtrack. Instead, it was later confirmed that he is writing original songs for the game. The soundtrack itself is still under the responsability of Kyd and Schachner.

One of the pioneers of contemporary Nordic Folk music, Einar “Kvitrafn” Selvik is no stranger to scoring pop culture productions. Apart from his well known work on History’s Vikings TV show alongside composer Trevor Morris (Redbad, The Tudors), he has also previously worked on League of Legends, as well as on the hybrid survival game Rend, alongside composer Neal Acree (World of Warcraft).

Einar’s collaboration with Ubisoft is part of a (fortunately) growing trend of folk musicians taking part in video game soundtracks. Apart from him, the Polish band Percival became notorious for taking part in the The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt soundtrack. Other musicians like The HU (Star Wars Jedi: The Fallen Order ), Heilung (Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II) and Faroese singer Eivør Pálsdóttir (God of War) have also left their marks on games. Greek folk band Daemonia Nymphe also held talks with Ubisoft to compose music for Assassin’s Creed latest installment, Odyssey, but things didn’t work out in the end.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is based on the conflicts between the Viking invaders and the Saxons during late 9th century. The player will control a (either male or female) warrior named Eivor, who’ll have to battle Wessex’s King Alfred the Great’s army in order to begin a new life far away from your home country in Norway.

The game will be released in late 2020 for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Google Stadia.
